Influences which genes are activated and which are not. Is the biochemical process essential to maintain the functionality of cells? Vitamins, hormones, neurotransmitters and antibodies work only if methylation occurs correctly. Another crucial role of methylation is to reduce high blood levels of homocysteine, a toxic compound produced during cell metabolism. Unfortunately, as we age, methylation becomes less effective.

The result is an increase in the opportunity for poor cellular function and disease.

We need certain vitamins and minerals to regulate methylation. If a person diet lacks these vitamins and minerals there is not enough methyl groups to make methyl happen. This leads to disease and poor health and the increase in blood levels of homocysteine.

Every minute every day the cells in our body have huge quantities of molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that contain certain electrons. Electron prefer to be paired with another electron in order to have a balanced electrical charge. This is called oxidative stress. It’s a natural process like breathing. But our bodies do an excellent job of keeping free radicals in check. It happens with antioxidants we need in our diet.

Over time our body ability to control oxidative stress becomes slightly less efficient. In addition to this natural oxidative stress, our habits and activities can contribute to even more oxidative stress. What is a Telomere?

Telomere (tel-uh-meer) for Greek telos (end) and meros (part)

Telomeres are an essential part of the human cells that affect how our cells age. Inside the nucleus of a cell, our genes are arranged along twisted, double stranded molecules of DNA called chromosomes. At the end of the chromosomes are stretches of DNA called telomeres, which protect our genetic data, make it possible for cells to divide, and hold some secrets on how we age and get cancer.

Telomeres are the caps at the end of the DNA that protect our chromosomes, lie the plastic tips at the end of the shoelaces.

Without the coating the shoelaces become frayed until they no longer do their job, just as without telomeres, DNA strands become damaged and our cells can’t do their job.

DNA makes up all our cells in our body. It is the genetic material that makes us who we are. And every organ (skin, heart, liver, colon, kidneys, etc) is made up of cells. So, telomeres are vital to our health.

Our cells replenish by copying themselves. This happens constantly throughout our lives. Telomeres get shorter each time a cell copies itself.

Why is glycation bad?
